While in Kentucky, we went to the Mayfield fireworks show on Fourth of July, which was actually pretty impressive–about 25 minutes! Then we went swimming in a pool that belongs to a coworker of Zak. On Sunday, after church, we went to the Land Between the Lakes to swim at the beach, have a cookout, and visit the Nature Preserve and the Elk and Bison Field. We learned all about different birds of prey at the Nature Preserve and looked in the enclosures of some other animals like the opposums and red wolves. On Monday, we drove into Paducah, visited the Farmer’s Market, which had fresh eggplants, tomatoes, squash, corn, cucumbers, and even peaches–all locally grown–and had a nice picnic lunch by the rivers. Paducah is where the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers meet, and has been an important trading route and battleground in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. After that, we walked around the downtown area and looked at all the murals painted along the flood walls that tell the history of the town. We then had some ice cream and visited the quilt museum. If you’re ever in Paducah, the quilt museum is a must-see. The artwork is incredible.
After a quick stop at the grocery store, we came home and fixed salad from the items we’d purchased at the Farmer’s Market, corn, potatoes, and salmon. Each evening, we’ve been sitting out on Elizabeth and Zak’s huge front porch and chatting with the friendly neighbors here in Mayfield. So far it’s been a wonderful trip!
